SOUTHPORT CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

2012-2013 School Improvement Plan

Our School Improvement Plan for the 2012-2013 school year is a multi-purpose document that not only addresses the continual improvement of our physical campus, our teaching methodology, and assessment, but will also assist us in improving our recruitment and outreach to potential students and their families.  Each member of our school family, including our Teachers, Administrators, Board Members, and Parents must become effective representatives of our Christian school and all it has to offer the community.  Our ultimate goal is that we continue to strive to be a Christ-centered ministry, serving with joy in our mission, working together to make our school the very best.

School Improvement Goal 1:               Christ is our Core

Our school/staff family will lead by example in word, deed, action, and dress at school and in the community.  These are principles that we hold dear as Christians.  Prayer, devotions and activities, such as Chapel Specials, enforce this message.

School Improvement Goal 2:               Safe and Secure School

Each member of the staff will be diligent in observing our campus and creating a safe learning environment.  Hand-held radios will be taken to the playground during recess to stay in communication with the office.  All are expected to keep our respective space and classrooms neat, clean, orderly, creative, loving and nurturing.

School Improvement Goal 3:               Effective Communication

Staff will be guided by our Handbook in communicating with their students, staff, parents, and members of our community.  Weekly class newsletters should enable parents to understand the weekly goals, daily assignments, expectations and test schedules.  School weekly newsletters should enable parents to understand the upcoming events and information pertaining to the school as a whole.

The school website should be updated weekly with upcoming dates, special events, class photos and registration information.

School Improvement Goal 4:               Curriculum, Methodology and Assessment

As dedicated teachers striving for excellence, this goal is self-evident.  Our students must be prepared to be effective and successful learners.  Our curriculum, methodology and assessment should be reflective of our high standards.  It is important that our children excel in their respective academic disciplines.  Each teacher is responsible for providing well-planned lessons and instructional activities that meet each child’s learning modality, in accordance with SCS’s policies and standards.

School Improvement Goal 5:               Excellence in Academics

5.1      North Carolina Standards will be reviewed by Principal and Staff on a regular basis.

5.2      Student grade checklists for teachers will be used, focusing on grades 2-5, to ensure that SCS meets and/or exceeds state standards.

5.3      Teachers will meet regularly to discuss curriculum and assessment.  This time will also be used to share ideas and collaborate.  As a family of educators we must continue to improve instructional strategies and learning activities for our children.

School Improvement Goal 6:               Technology

The staff will integrate technology to improve student knowledge, reinforce skills, enrich study of topics and themes, and improve testing outcomes.  At all times the use of technology, especially the internet, should be used judiciously and responsibly.

School Improvement Goal 7:               Outreach and Recruitment

7.1      It is the universal goal of our staff and board members to be keenly aware that their words, deeds, and dress reflect on the integrity of our school and our Christian beliefs, as outlined in SCS’s Policies and Procedures.  Every staff member is an ambassador for our school and its ministry.

7.2      Our website and media releases should be effective, informative, and reflect our Christian ideals.  All information relative to this end, including school correspondence, newsworthy articles, and information for our website, must receive Principal approval.

School Improvement Goal 8:               Family Association

Mrs. Kim Anderson will lead our Family Association (FA) that will develop and support appropriate activities to enrich our school and favorably publicize our activities and events.  For example, weekly Chapel Coffee Break, Staff Appreciation Day, Fall Festival, Golf Tournament, and other events planned by SCS, will be coordinated by this group.  Further, the FA will assist with teacher/classroom support, such as Room Mothers, field trip activities and special school events.

School Improvement Goal 9:               Building and Grounds

9.1      Scott Tomlinson and Coach Vacirca will observe campus conditions and make recommendations for repairs and improvements.

9.2      Twice each school year a campus clean-up day will occur.

School Improvement Goal 10:  Fiscal Responsibility

God has blessed us greatly in providing facilities and financial resources to continue the ministry of SCS.

10.1    Each of us will be responsible stewards of our resources, facilities, and materials used to educate our students.

10.2    Small steps daily will help conserve SCS’s resources annually; such as paper and other supplies.

10.3    The Principal, Treasurer, and Book keeper will meet monthly to monitor the budget.
