Principal: Mrs. Lisa Kjome

 

Bio: Born in North Carolina, received B.A. in Business Economics from Indiana University, B.S. in Early Childhood Education from Mount Olive College

 

History With SCS: 14 years with SCS, served as principal for 10 years, served 2 years on School Board, taught 1st grade for 2 years, had 2 children graduate from SCS

 

Office Manager: Mrs. Meredith Jones

 

Bio: Born in Charlotte, NC; raised in Chapel Hill/Durham, NC, spent time living abroad with parents, graduate of Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.

 

History With SCS: Former School Board Treasurer,former school parent, volunteer co-coordinator for several fundraising events, former art teacher and classroom assistant over the past 8 years.

 

Areas of Interest for the Upcoming School Year: Expanding our school website, raising awareness of our school in the

community, encouraging parental involvement in the growth of SCS, being a resource for the SCS staff.

 

Preschool:

 

Mrs. Michelle Watson

 

History With SCS: 3 years teaching preschool at SCS; two children graduated from SCS.

 

Bio: Originally from Wilmington, married with 2 children, moved to Southport-Oak Island area in 2001; has taught preschool for over 7 years

 

Areas of Interest for the Upcoming School Year: Exploring science through cooking and gardening; extensive hands-on

activities-“We love our new rice table!”

 

Mary Nichols

Teacher Assistant

 

Bio: Born in Florida, lived in Brunswick County since the age of 3, graduate of Miller-Motte College with an Associate’s degree

 

History With SCS: 1st year with SCS, 2 children currently attending SCS

 

Areas of Interest for the Upcoming School Year: “Seeing the ‘light bulb’ go off as much as possible.”

 

Prekindergarten:

 

Mrs. Amy Briggs

Lead Teacher

 

Bio: Originally from Silver Spring, MD; moved to Southport in 1985, married with 3 children

 

History With SCS: PreK teacher with SCS for 6 years, currently has one child at SCS

 

Areas of Interest for the Upcoming School Year: Helping preschoolers to become more acclimated to a structured environment where social, emotional and spiritual needs are met while expanding their academic growth at an individual pace.

 

Mrs. Nicole Harrell

Lead Teacher

 

Bio: Graduate of UNCW with a B.A. degree in elementary education with a concentration in Psychology, former teacher at SBMS

 

History With SCS: 3rd year with SCS, 3 children currently attending SCS

 

Mrs. Chrystal Causey

Prekindergarten Assistant; co-coordinator for annual Field Day/Family Appreciation Day

 

Bio: Originally from Southport

 

History With SCS: Prekindergarten assistant with SCS for 6 years, previous volunteer P.E. teacher

Had one child attend SCS

 

Mrs. Kerry Russell

Prekindergarten Assistant

 

History With SCS: 7 years prekindergarten assistant with SCS

 

Bio: Born and raised in York, S.C., moved to Oak Island in 1984; previously worked with children in early education; part-owner/operator of Oak Island Automotive with husband Rick; 21 years in ministry with husband at Herrings Chapel UMC in Burgaw

 

Areas of Interest for the Upcoming School Year: Helping to encourage and help the children to grow into disciples of Jesus Christ; Prayer

 

Kindergarten:

 

Ms. Eddielyn Bishop

Lead Teacher

 

Bio: Born in Seattle, WA; lived in 9 states before coming to NC; Graduate of King’s College, Charlotte

 

History With SCS: Kindergarten teacher since 1997

 

Areas of Interest for the Upcoming School Year: Caldecott Books, Our Amazing Body, The Old West

 

Mrs. Lisa Clark

Teacher Assistant

 

Bio: Born in Leeper, MI; lived in Charleston, SC as well as Covington, KY and Boiling Spring Lakes, NC.

 

History With SCS: 15 years with SCS, had one child attend SCS

 

First Grade:

 

Mrs. Connie Costa

Lead Teacher

 

Bio: Originally from Pittsburgh,PA ; graduate of Slippery Rock College with a degree in Early Education

 

History With SCS: Over 9 years teaching at SCS

 

Areas of Interest for the Upcoming School Year: Monthly highlights focusing on our area, the seasons, life science and social/historical issues

 

Second Grade: Mrs. Allison Brendle

 

Bio: Graduate of UNCW with a degree in early education, concentration in exceptional children, formerly taught at SBMS

 

History With SCS: 8 years teaching with SCS, 3 children graduated from SCS

 

Third Grade: Mrs. Diane Sloan

 

Bio: Previously taught art for prekindergarten and kindergarten classes

 

Background: Originally from Chicago, IL; received undergraduate degree from the University of  Illinois and Master’s Degree from Ohio State; certified in Reading Recovery by Clemson University; currently a portrait artist

 

Areas of Interest for the Upcoming School Year: Where in God’s universe are we? What is our place in space?  U.S. history and geography will be studied; goal for all students to become seekers of knowledge and independent workers

 

Fourth Grade: Mrs. Suzanne Vacirca

 

Bio: Originally from Massachusetts; graduate of St. Anselm College; previously Development Director for at the high school level as well as for a community health foundation

 

History With SCS: Fourth year teaching 4th and 5th grades

 

Areas of Interest for the Upcoming School Year: Continuation of 4th and 5th grade blog “Writing Our World,” located at www.writingourworld.blogspot.com

 

Fifth Grade: Mrs. Suzann Jones

 

Bio: Originally from Rhode Island, moved to Southport in 1974; received B.S. from the University of Houston in 1973, NTC and NCTL received in 1973, graduate school RN received in 1986; married with 3 children and 4 grandchildren

 

History With SCS: 8 years teaching 2nd and 3rd  grades, and 4th and 5th grade math and science.

 

Areas of Interest for the Upcoming School Year: Exploring God’s world and creatures through math and science

 

Special Classes:

 

Art: Mrs. Francesca Clemmons

 

Bio: Originally from California, grew up in New Jersey and New York, traveled among several states; received degree in Fine Arts from Young Harris College, BFA from North Georgia College and State University, studied Anthropology at Northern Arizona University

 

History With SCS: 5th year at SCS, 3 children attended SCS, 1 currently attending SCS

 

Areas of Interest for the Upcoming School Year: Emphasis on art history, encouraging recycling materials for creative use

 

PE, Health, Spanish: Mr. Frank Vacirca

 

Bio: Previously from Massachusetts; retired school superintendent after 34 years in the school system
